METUCHEN — Edgar Middle School in Metuchen has been selected to participate in the Princeton University-sponsored Roots program.
The Roots program is part of an anti-Harassment, Intimidation & Bullying intervention and research program run by researchers from Princeton University. It focuses on measuring school climate using advanced social network survey techniques.
Edgar Middle School was one of 60 schools state-wide accepted to participate in this program. Edgar Assistant Principal Mike Knoth will be the district contact person for the program. He said, “This partnership with Princeton University and the Roots Program is a wonderful opportunity for Edgar Middle School and the Metuchen School District to continue its emphasis on providing Metuchen students with strong and effective HIB education”.
Students will be surveyed about their social relationships and will be asked about their perceptions of what other students at the school think. This confidential data will help researchers develop a social network profile for the school with the goal of learning about the school climate. This will further assist researchers to make recommendations about the best ways to spread tolerant and inclusive behavior throughout the school.
Edgar Middle School is a 5th through 8th grade public school located on Brunswick Avenue.
